A TOTAL of K1.5 million has been allocated for the relocation of Kokoda Technical High School in Northern to a new site.
When breaking ground for the exercise, Sohe MP and Minister for Commerce and Industry Henry Amuli said the district development authority met last Monday and approved the funding.
Amuli told guests at the ground-breaking ceremony that having access to quality education was an important element of building a good, strong and self-sufficient society.
Kokoda has a population of about 30,000 people.
“Under my leadership, education remains a key priority area for our district, and for that our DDA in a special meeting in Kokoda this (last) week approved a funding of K1.5 million to start work on the new site,” Amuli said.
The money would be used for the construction of a four-in-one classroom and the administration building to kick-start the exercise.
Kokoda High School was established eight years ago, with only three buildings for classes and administration; using the premises of Kokoda Primary School.
“The DDA has been working closely with the provincial lands office and other authorities to ensure land is secured for the school,” Amuli said.
“I am happy to say that we have secured 33ha of land for the school.”
Martyrs Memorial Secondary is the other such educational institution in the district.
The local MP said plans were underway to also relocate the Sohe headquarters from Popondetta to Kokoda.
