THE round-six Digicel Cup match between the Rabaul Gurias and Goroka Lahanis has been relocated to Lae due to air travel issues, according to the competition organisers.
Papua New Guinea National Rugby League Competition manager Stanley Hondina said in a statement that due to the rescheduling of flights over the Covid-19 pandemic, the Goroka-Kokopo sector was not possible. “Convenient flights for the sector were not viable and possible scenarios were considered,” he said yesterday.
“The decision was reached in close consultation with the Lahanis and Gurias.
“These trying times need all our stakeholders to work together and the decision is an indication of such unity which has got our competition thus far.”
Hondina said the game would now be played at the Lae Rugby League Ground on Saturday, with tickets selling for K20 per person and free admission for children below the age of three.
“The gates at the Lae Rugby League Ground open at 12pm with the kick-off at 2pm,” he said.
Hondina said Sunday’s Lae double-header — Tigers-Kimbe Cutters and Enga Mioks-Gulf Isou — would go ahead as scheduled with the first game kicking off at 1.15pm.
Hondina acknowledged the hard work and support of their sponsors, staff and volunteers in preparing for the Kalabond match.
“The travel issue is beyond our control,” he said.
“Thank you all for your understanding.
“We really appreciate and value your continued support.”
