 WATER PNG will be collaborating with all stakeholders involved in the K87 million sewerage project for Kokopo to ensure the project designs meet its high standards.

The company in a statement said the project must be executed and completed in three phases.

Water PNG was invited to join a series of urgent meetings held in Kokopo between the Gazelle Restoration Authority and the Islands Design and Engineering Ltd (IDEL).

After much deliberation, Water PNG’s chief executive officer Billy Imar, general manager engineering Sibona Vavia and manager design services Sebastian Tomausi recommended that the project be prioritised as a matter of urgency as it was 10 months behind schedule.

Water PNG said to minimise further delays, the following suggestions were agreed on:

  • That through the ENB provincial administration/Government of PNG to the donor (Exim Bank, China) an extension of four months in the design phase be allowed for proper design review to be carried out by relevant stakeholders;
  • that the massive sewerage project be implemented in three stages and a packaged treatment plant option be considered as proposed by Water PNG;
  • that a design report be prepared by the contractor;
  • that an MOU be signed between Water PNG, ENBPA and the contractor to allow WPNG’s participation;
  • that IDEL furnish to Water PNG copies of the design report, the revised project time line as per the contractor’s programme and the revised preliminary drawings under the design/build contract signed with the State under the Central Supply and Tenders Board; and,
  • That GRA / IDEL /ENBPA fast track their efforts to locate and acquire a suitable treatment plant site based in Kokopo and Takubar for Stage 1 of the project development.
