SECOND-PLACED Gulf Komara went eight points clear of Port Moresby Strikers with a 2-1 victory in round nine of the National Soccer League in Port Moresby on Saturday.
Komara’s Numa Kila opened scoring from a Tau Winnie cross followed by another goal by Renagi Taviri to give coach David Aua’s men a handy lead in the round-nine fixture at Papua New Guinea Football Stadium.
Strikers were off target until Pettyshen Elizah slotted home a consolation goal.
Komara assistant coach Steven Mune said he was thrilled with the win.
“We had the ascendency until the last 10 minutes when Strikers scored,” he said.
“It was hard to defend and get the ball moving forward, but it was a good game.
“They’re a great team in terms of youth and experience.
“We’ve been playing good football, so continuing the momentum is crucial.
“When we dropped off a little in the last 10 minutes, it gave them room to score.
“That’s something that we need to work during the week.
“Teams are picking up in the second half of the season, so we’re just mindful of that and ensuring that we remain focused.”
Meanwhile, Strikers coach Philemon Tamari said they had missed multiple scoring opportunities.
“I think the game was balanced, but it was disappointing to see all our chances go straight to the goalkeeper,” he said.
“This is the business end of the season, so it’s time to be really serious about what we’re doing.
“Our preparation was good, but we were unfortunate not to score.
“Komara had two good chances that they put away, so congratulations to them.”
