KONE Tigers and Hohola Flies registered A-grade wins in week four of the second round in the Port Moresby Rugby Football League competition following the resumption of matches last week.
A penalty conversion from Tigers halfback Bradwin Smith saw them beat Souths 10-8 with the Tigers still having a fighting chance to sneak into the top-eight.
The 12th-placed Tigers started the match on the back foot after a series of handling errors saw Souths dominate the middle through prop Rodwell John.
Despite a strong Souths attack in the opening 10 minutes, the Eki Ene-coached Tigers managed to contain them with Smith setting second-rower Melkis Kare for an unconverted try 15 minutes in.
A fumble from the Tigers straight after the kick restart saw Souths centre Matthew Pakana capitalise and score his side’s first try under the uprights with No.6 William Mone adding the extras for a 6-4 lead.
The Tigers took their attack to the right edge with Smith this time assisting substitute Kingsley Kerepa for their second try to re-take the lead at halftime (8-6).
Mone converted a penalty goal early in the second half to lock the scores at 8-8, but Smith responded with a penalty goal 10 minutes from fulltime to ensure the win.
Meanwhile, third-placed Flies grabbed a 12-8 win over Royals following a scoreless first half.
Flies stepped up in the second half with two quick tries through Abraham Sayafe and Darren Anabe for a 12-0 lead.
A late response from the Royals saw them sneak in two unconverted tries via Kingsley Dabe and Lote Waula, but time ran out as Flies held on for a 12-8 win.
