KONE Tigers have urged their players to become role models in a bid to improve the Port Moresby Rugby Football League (POMRFL) club’s image, according to an official.
Tigers president Benson Upas said he and his executives had a vision to change the image of the Lae Biscuit Company-sponsored club during their three-year tenure.
He challenged the players to change their attitudes and adopt a new club culture. “These will take the club profile to the next level to attract sponsorship from the corporate and private sectors,” Upas said.
“We’re grateful to Lae Biscuit Company managing director Ian Chow and his family for continuing their sponsorship for the club.
“We appreciate their generous support.
“We’re part of POMRFL which is an affiliate of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League and not an offseason league.”
Upas warned his players to remain disciplined on and off the field as it could attract more sponsorship from other business houses.
“There should be respect in the club and the rugby league community,” he said.
“If you can’t shape up then you’re not welcome at our club. We don’t need you.
“You can go elsewhere and join a new club.”
Meanwhile, he commended their A-Grade, Under-20 and women’s teams for strong campaigns last season.
Their A-Grade and U20 teams claimed the minor premiership but were knocked out in the preliminary finals.
Upas said five of their players had joined Digicel Cup teams which was a testament to their efforts in creating and maintaining a pathway to the SP Hunters.
“Players should always look at advancing themselves and that means pushing for opportunities in tougher competitions,” he said.
“There is also the opportunity of making the representative sides like the PNG Orchids.”
