Kumul Petroleum Holdings Ltd has donated 52 solar panels and kits to displaced Kadovar islanders at Dandan care centre in East Sepik.
Managing director Wapu Sonk said that these kits could light up over 60 houses.
“KPHL is pleased to support Kadovar islanders,” he said.
“As the national oil and gas company, we are pleased to assist victims of Kadovar disaster, which has displaced the islanders who are now living in a new settlement on the mainland.
“These solar lighting kits will greatly improve the livelihoods of these people.
“One of our company values is to create benefits for Papua New Guineans.
“This donation is certainly going to benefit the people.”
Sonk said that this year, KPHL donated K50,000 after the Kadovar eruption, which resulted in the islanders moving to Dandan on Turubu on the mainland.
East Sepik Governor Allan Bird received the kits. He said that they were happy for such donations.
“Little thing like lighting are always been appreciated by islanders living at the Dandan care centre,” he said.
Bird said there were now 576 people living at the care centre in Turubu after several Islanders moved to other areas within East Sepik.
The volcano on Kadovar erupted on Jan 5, forcing over 600 islanders to flee to Dandan.
The Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) is Papua New Guinea’s national oil and gas company.
