THE Port Moresby Racquets Club has received a K25,000 sponsorship from Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited to support the junior squash development programme.
Pom Racquets Club director Merlyn Alarcos said the sponsorship would be used to engage experienced coaches to help prepare the juniors for upcoming events this year.
“KPHL’s sponsorship will help the club bring experienced coaches to train the juniors and prepare them for upcoming tourneys leading up to the world junior squash championship expected to take place midyear in Australia,” Alarcos said.
She said a few juniors would be targeted to train under the programme including coaching camps.
“There will be a couple of camps for our coaches to come in and train our juniors while our junior coaches who are also experienced players will undergo more technique driven coaching to assist with the upcoming juniors,” she said.
KPHL’s chief legal officer Rogen Wato said they were aware of squash’s achievement in the region and this interest should to be maintained through coaching the juniors.
“PNG sent a small team of squash players to the commonwealth games last year and has played in regional competitions for years, so it is evident there is a core of talent in the country who are available to mentor the younger players,” said Wato.
Wato added that KPHL was supporting national development projects at all levels from community development initiatives to sporting activities.
