KUMUL Nixon Putt and his fellow forwards are set to lay the foundation for their backs to score points in Saturday’s Oceania Cup match against Fiji in Christchurch, New Zealand.
The 24-year old back-rower, who has played four tests for the Kumuls, told The National on Monday that PNG had quality backs who could score points from anywhere on the field.
“Our forwards are not too worried about the Fijian pack but we are focused on trying to give ample space for our backs to work their magic,” Putt said ahead of their clash at Orangetheory Stadium.
“I believe in our backs, they know what is required of them by coach Michael Marum. I’m sure they will deliver if provided enough space.”
The North Devils forward said the Kumuls were not buying into the winning record they had against the Batis.
Putt said they knew their fellow Melanesian would be out for redemption after consecutive losses to the Kumuls in the 2016 and 2018 Pacific tests.
“We know they will be fired up for this game,” the former SP Hunter said.
“We watched how Fiji played against Samoa (in their 44-18 victory last weekend) and we know where their strengths are.
“If our forwards can tear down their pack and slow down their ruck speed then we should get the job done.”
Putt said PNG’s trademark aggression and physicality would be on display despite having a smaller pack.
He said that had been their style of play over the years and it would not change going into the match.
