Kumuls suffer setback

PAPUA New Guinea’s 2021 Rugby League World Cup preparations have suffered a setback with Keighley Cougars confirming that Kumuls forward Wellington Albert will miss the most of the English League One season due to injury.
The club said the 26-year-old former SP Hunter suffered “a fracture dislocation to his ankle that requires surgical repair later today following an accident in training yesterday”.
“Already established as a popular figure among his teammates and staff, the club will support Wellington and his family throughout this difficult period,” the Cougars said in a statement.
“We wish Wellington a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
Kumuls head coach Michael Marum told The National yesterday that the injury was “not good news” for Albert and the Kumuls.
“It’s still too early to make a call as I’m yet to receive a proper report on the injury,” he said.
“It’s important that the players we select in the 23-man squad are injury-free and playing consistent rugby league leading up to the World Cup.
“The World Cup is in October, so we’ll wait and see how Wellington recovers. “His experience is invaluable, he has been an integral part of the Kumuls over the years.”
Asked if the Kumuls had enough depth to fill the void if Albert was ruled out, Marum said: “It could have a big impact on selection. I’m looking at least three or four front-rowers for the squad. We have Luke Page who has always been reliable.
“There’s also McKenzie Yei who is with the (Central Queensland) Capras.”
Marum said they had mid-season match which forwards could play well and push for selections.
“We’re planning mid-season matches which will provide a great opportunity for other forwards to put their feet down and push for selection.
“We’re having regular monthly meetings and keeping track of all our players in all competitions.
“We have to make sure that we tick off all the boxes and get everything right, including our preparation, before we head to England.”
