PREPARATIONS for the second match of the Oceania Cup against Fiji and the Great Britain Lions tour of Papua New Guinea will see the Kumuls strengthen their squad for the end-of-season tests.
PNGRFL media and public relations manager Ephata Samuel told The National yesterday that the Kumuls squad for the tests would be named on Tuesday.
“After the inaugural Rugby League World Cup Nines in Sydney, the Kumuls will return on Sunday and recover before assessments are done on injuries,” he said.
“Once the assessments are done, the squad will be named.
“All the players will then have a week’s break before returning to camp on Oct 28 to prepare for the tests.”
He said the core of the nines squad would be retained.
Meanwhile, PNG Rugby Football League chairman Sandis Tsaka and chief executive Reatau Rau are attending a Rugby League International Federation (RLIF) meeting in Sydney today, ahead of nines tournament which starts on Friday and ends on Saturday.
Samuel said PNG’s involvement in such meetings was vital as participation within rugby league continued to grow.
“The chairman is part of the RLIF board, tasked with overseeing the sport in Asia-Pacific,” he said.
