LOCAL farmers from Chimbu’s Kundiawa-Gembogl district will be able to maintain the quality of their fresh produce including potato and bulb onions while supplying markets around the country and overseas on time, local MP William Onglo says.
Onglo said this at the opening of the Kundiawa-Gembogl Agro-fresh chiller and cold chain supply facility in Port Moresby yesterday.
He said sometimes farmers lost both quality and quantity of their produces along the way before it reached the targeted market because of improper storage.
“It was always hard for our local farmers to maintain the quality of their fresh produces because sometimes they lost half of their products due to the lack of proper storage and cooling facilities,” Onglo said.
He said if fresh produce was not protected then the farmers would not be able to meet the market demand and ensure consistent quality and delivery times.
Onglo, who is also the Police Minister, said the new fresh chiller and cold supply chain facility would enable the farmers not only in Kundiawa-Gembogl but throughout the province to supply their produce to Lae, Port Moresby and other centres in the country efficiently and maintain quality.
