THE Constitutional and Law Reform Commission (CLRC) will be positioned within the bigger national coordination mechanism (NCM) of the law and justice sector, Attorney-General Davis Steven says.
Steven said appointment of Dr Eric Kwa, pictured, to head the Department of Justice and Attorney-General would see the law and justice sector putting its house in order.
“It gives me some degree of assurance that with the arrival of Dr Kwa as secretary we are going to put CLRC in its place and positioning within the bigger NCM family,” he said.
“One of Dr Kwa’s key functions would be to make the NCM process functional.”
Steven said at the top level and the ministerial level, there were some changes taking place.
“We wanted the leadership level where NCM is concerned, CLRC, police, high and lower judiciary level, Correctional Services – all in the law and justice sector – to come together and start prioritising on our limited resources,” he said.
“We need our people’s direct input into the laws that we are passing but the funding constraints are so real.
“The challenge that they are going to tackle is how to resource priority areas within our means.”
He acknowledged the work of CLRC. Although the commission is a smaller organisation, it has an important role in reviewing the laws.
“I commend the commission for the review of the laws, including the election-related laws,” he said.
“We in cabinet are looking forward to your report on the laws that have been reviewed.”
