KWIKILA Secondary School say they are aiming to use this year’s Central inter-school carnival as a stepping stone for their students into the national athletics squad.
School assistant sports coordinator Lalema Ligo said national representative Shadrick Tansi was identified while donning the Kwikila colours on the tracks in 2018.
“In the last carnival, a few of our students were selected,” he said.
“Our former student, Tansi, who is based in the United States, was identified from this carnival.”
Ligo said another goal for the four-day carnival, which started on Monday at Sir John Guise Stadium, was to showcase Kwikila’s talents in ball games.
“Our aim is to continue to market more of our athletes,” he said.
“We’re not just here to enjoy the games.
“Our purpose or goal is to at least get a few of our athletes to be selected, trained and mentored to represent PNG like Tansi.”
Kwikila, Mainohana and Iarowari have dominated the track and field events over the past two carnivals.
Ligo said they were looking to capitalise on Mainohana’s withdrawal from the carnival.
“We really wanted Mainohana to come so that we could battle them on the track,” he said.
“Our athletes’ focus was on them because they had many potential runners.
“Unfortunately, due to their own commitments, they didn’t come.”
Meanwhile, all the ball games ended yesterday.
All the participating schools will assemble for the start of the track and field events today.
