THE Kwikila Varovarona are the champions of Sinaugoro netball after they beat Saroa Raiders 18-17 in their grand final at the Kwikila Secondary School court on Saturday.
They also earned an K8000 prize along with a trophy for their efforts while the runners-up got K5000.
The women from Kwikila station edged the Saroa village women in the second season of the Sinaugoro netball competition.
Varovarona led through all quarters (5-3, 10-6, 15-12 and 18-17) with goal-shooter Walo Badi collecting 13 points and Helen Chiko five.
Saroa goal-attack Morro Tubuio rattled off nine points and Seville Asi managed eight but the pair did miss nine attempts.
“We played as a team and won but it was not that easy,” Chiko said.
“We knew that to win we had to play good defence and get all our shots.
“This is a very good result because we have prepared well and wanted to end the season on high.”
Varovarona had good contributors with centre Tauna Gabi, wing-attack Olive Gabina, wing-defence Wini Gwaibo and defenders Aisha Robert and Vele Walo keeping their side in the contest.
Raiders’Rosella Gwaibo, Sailee Mairi, Rose Sao, Cindy Iamo and Celina Mareva got their side level at 17- 17 with less than 30 seconds remaining but could not keep out Badi who nailed the match-winner just before the final whistle.
Kwikila’s Badi was later named the best shooter, Gabina best mid-courter and Raiders’ Mareva the best defender.
