Lack of awareness making communities ignorant

AWARENESS about environmental protection is lacking in communities, says a representative from the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (Jica).
Jica representative Yukihiro Kondo said during a clean-up campaign in Port Moresby on Saturday that the campaign was about improving solid waste management in communities.
Jica, the Conservation and Environment Protection Authority (Cepa) and the National Capital District Commission carried out the campaign at Elevala village in Hanuabada, Port Moresby.
“Jica has been conducting a lot of projects in the environment sector but one of the biggest is solid waste management. It started in 2011 and this campaign is a part of what we will continue to do until 2021,” he said.
Kondo said one of the two reasons for the campaign was that Jica was working closely with government agencies like Cepa and NCDC to make the solid waste action plan for NCDC.
He said they would work with communities to address solid waste issues at the lowest level possible as the campaign was also in line with the government’s move to ban plastics within the next 18 months.
