Lack of manpower slows work at Public Solicitor’s Office

The Public Solicitor’s Office is down with manpower and has limited resources to assist with legal aid, says acting public solicitor Leslie Mamu.
Mamu told The National that he was concerned that there was not much support from in-house lawyers because there were not enough of them.
“My concern is that it is not a healthy trend,” he said.
“The current status is that there are over a hundred files to one lawyer in the Public Solicitor’s Office and we need the government to support us in terms of finance and manpower,” Mamu said.
“We also need to protect our lawyers from such unhealthy ratios.”
Mamu said the government should look into increasing positions for lawyers so that the office could employ more lawyers.
“The Public Solicitor’s Office needs more lawyers to assist with the increase in workload that is building up over time. “As the population increases, the workload also increases and when this happens we must also ensure that there is legal aid assistance available to our people who can have access to justice,” he said.
