LAE Biscuit Company has assisted national athletes training in Lae with 50 cartons of Snax noodles.
Elite athletes Leonie Beu, Ephraim Lerkin, Shadrick Tansi and Emmanuel Wanga received the donation from the company marketing manager Harry Kaisa at the firm’s headquarters on Friday.
The four and East Sepik athlete Isila Apkup are based in Lae and are aiming to enrol in colleges in the United States (US) by the end of August.
Athletics Papua New Guinea president Tony Green thanked the company for its ongoing support and said the athletes would be working together to raise funds over the next few months.
“We have made some progress with partial scholarship assistance for some of the athletes but we still have some way to go to raise all of the necessary funds to cover travel and visa-related expenses as well as tuition and living expenses in the US,” Green said in statement.
“For athletes who have a common purpose such as this, it’s good to have them together not just for training but for fundraising and motivation.
“Athletics can be a lonely sport and it can be hard for individuals who are on their own especially after completing high school.
“Obviously, the Covid-19 situation is a major challenge to us all and APNG has shared with its athletes advice and information received from World Athletics and the Oceania Athletics Association. “We continue to innovate and train from home despite the restriction on movements in the city.”
Kaisa said as a sports supporter and despite the state of emergency, the company was eager to support PNG’s sportsmen and women to stay strong and committed to their tasks.
“With this small donation, we hope this will further motivate the athletes to continue their training,” he said.
