A 46-YEAR-OLD man charged with wilful damage had his case transferred to a grade 5 court after an election certificate was filed and approved by the public prosecutor on Monday.
The Lae Committal Court noted that Fabian Peter, a People’s National Congress party candidate for the Lae Open, was charged with wilful damage, after allegedly damaging a vehicle valued at about K30,000, and inciting violence involving supporters of the political party.
Magistrate Samuel Lavutul transferred the case to the grade 5 court to be mentioned today (Aug 4) and adjourned the other offence to Aug 15 because police files were not ready.
The court remanded Peter of Maguer village in Wewak, East Sepik, at Buimo prison.
The police brief in court showed that both the offences charged against Peter occurred on the same day, but he was charged differently according to the nature of the offence committed.
Police alleged that on June 24, Peter and PNC supporters assaulted Lae Urban Metropolitan service’s manager Meshach Nakayuwi along with two employees at Eriku Oval in Lae, Morobe, during the preparations for a PNC rally.
The court heard that a vehicle almost hit one of the party’s supporters while maneuvering in the area which saw the supporters attack the vehicle with sticks and stones, and Nakayuwi was trying to stop them.
The police summary in court stated that Peter and four supporters assaulted Nakayuwi but he managed to get a way while the vehicle was damaged.
The court also heard that Nakayuwi went back to the field the next morning only to discover that his car had been badly damaged and some of his property stolen Peter and his supporters.
