LAE City’s forward Jonathan Allen had a field day yesterday scoring four goals as the reigning National Soccer League champions piled six goals over a hapless Morobe Wawens side at the Papua New Guinea Football Association’s Education Centre at
11-Mile, outside Lae.
Wawens caught the champions off guard early in the first half with two quick goals, but Lae City’s experience, coupled with a friendly wind turned the sails in the second half to seal the match 6-2 in the Northern conference round 7 mid-week match.
Wawens caught the champions off guard early in the first half with two quick goals, but Lae City’s experience, coupled with a friendly wind turned the sails in the second half to seal the match 6-2 in the Northern conference round 7 mid-week match.
City coach Bob Morris said Wawens caught his men napping in the first half with goalkeeper Ronald Warisan’s mistakes outside the penalty box allowed the Rudolph Fred-coached side to score two goals.
“The boys showed character throughout the competition. We had been coming on strong in the second half,” Morris said.
Morris said Wawens’ defence slipped in the second half allowing City to dominate.
City had to work hard against an improved Wawens outfit after Samuel Jeremiah’s goal in the seventh minute and captain Sylvester Wafehunia’s goal in the 35 minute.
City veteran Eliude Fugre was the man of the moment setting Allen for his first goal and then backed up with a corner kick for Allen’s second goal in the dying stages of the first half.
With the wind behind them in the second half, the defending champions piled on four unanswered goals to Allen (2), Philip Steven and Albert Morgan Jr.
Wawens coach Fred said his men played well in the first half but couldn’t contain City’s momentum in the second stanza.
