Lae experiencing power cuts, says chamber

THE Lae Chamber of Commerce and Industry is getting updates on PNG Power regarding power cuts.
President John Byrne said Lae city had experienced an increase in power blackouts and drop outs over the past four months.
“The Lae PNG Power team is particularly responsive and the WhatsApp Group, ‘Lae Power Page’ keeps the members aware and alerts the PNG Power team immediately of any issue,” Byrne said.
“Despite this, however, the blackouts are costly to business in maintenance of equipment and machinery and downtime.
“Our citizens also suffer when the power goes out. As the engine room of PNG; a regular and guaranteed power supply is essential to Lae and we seek a resolution to ensuring constant and uninterrupted power for citizens and business.”
PNG Power chairman Peter Nupiri said yesterday that the load-shedding exercise conducted last month to this month had been stopped for this period till Christmas.
He apologised to the public and to the businesses for the constant blackouts and thanked them for their patience and sharing the burden faced by PNG Power.
Goroka Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Chris Anders earlier said he enquired with PNG Power earlier in the year about the possibility of some of its members converting to solar power to run their operations.
