POLICE in and around Lae city have beefed up security in preparation for the election campaign and voting.
Provincial police commander David Warap said there were no major incidents reported last weekend.
He also urged the people not to accept bribes and threats from candidates or their supporters.
He said police would make sure election campaigns and nominations were trouble-free.
He said some of his officers would be deployed to other centres such as the highlands region to monitor the elections.
Warap urged highway drivers to be extra careful when travelling on the highlands and Madang highway roads at this time.
According to Warap, there were reports that four people had died in an accident on one of the highways.
He said such accidents indicated that drivers were not using common sense when driving.
“Highway stations are not closed so drivers must learn to think and drive safely,” he said.
