LAE’S Chinese community has donated 30 simplex intercom radios to the police metropolitan command in Morobe to boost communication.
Metropolitan Superintendent Chris Kunyanban thanked the Chinese community in the city for their timely assistance, which would help them in the general elections.
“These radios are timely and comes in handy for the elections,” he said.
Kunyanban said the radios would be used as an alternative to the police radio network and at intervals by officers accompanying different polling teams.
“Officers at our operation lines would listen to their conversation, and if there’s an emergency, they’ll call support units through the police network,” he said.
Kunyanban said the radios would be registered under the police information and communication technology section and officers would sign out to use them during major events and special operations. “It is a simplex radio for communication between two people and would not disturb others or other radio networks,” he said.
Kunyanban said the radios had a 16km radius for coverage and would be good for use in policing major events such as sporting activities.
“The patrolling teams at venues would use the intercom to communicate and we’ll monitor from our operation centre.
“It will be used separately and won’t disturb the main radio network. It will not disturb the police network.”
Kunyanban thanked the Chinese community for the support, which would improve policing going forward.
Chinese community representative Kenny Lin said they had previously donated 10 similar radios to Lae market police.
“We are happy to support the police because they help us in many ways,” Lin said.
“We’re looking forward to other similar support in future.”
