LAGAIP MP Aimos Akem has negotiated peace among warring factions after a tribal land dispute which resulted in four deaths and the burning down of houses and properties last week.
The dispute was between Irale clan of Sakalin tribe and Kowan clan of Kunalin tribe that live around Sirunki government station along the Highlands Highway leading into Laiagam and Porgera.
“Attending to the tribal fight at Sirunki today was my biggest concern. I am satisfied because the people respected the rule of law and laid down their arms,” Akem said.
He acknowledged the tribes for coming together to make peace in the presence of security forces, law and order officials and the people of Sirunki.
Akem issued preventive orders to both factions with the help of police and Papua New Guinea Defence Force personnel.
“No more fighting in the forsaken Lagaip Valley for we will build Lagaip again,” Aken explained.
He assured the people that he will fairly distribute developmental projects and services throughout the district.
This is the fourth tribal conflict that the local MP has mediated peace in less than six months in office.
He also acknowledged the help of the local leaders, emphasising sincere gratitude to the security forces for managing law and order issues not only in Lagaip but throughout the province.
