TWENTY-year-old Gulf man Kenny Laho is set to make his representative debut at the National Super Under-23 Nines in Goroka tomorrow.
Hailing from Siviri village near Kerema town, the youngster was identified by PNGRFL Southern Confederate director Gwaibo Mairi during the Kerema Rugby League grand final last year.
Mairi said he was impressed with the lanky speedster’s performance for his club the Young Tigers where he scored two tries in an all-round effort.
Laho said it would be his first time out of Kerema and Port Moresby and a life time experience for him.
“I’m really nervous and it’s unbelievable that I made the Southern squad but I’m grateful to Mairi and Kerema rugby league for giving me a chance,” Laho said.
He acknowledged the advice and guidance provided by Southern coach Bagelo Solien.
“This is a different level for me and I’m just glad to be part of the side,” Laho said.
Port Moresby Vipers winger Michael Yannis will captain the squad which include Kaupa Rex, Saka Mairi, Amon Lesley, Tom Mana, Kenny Laho, Vic Doga, Christopher Taria, Junior Hoki, Michael Povera, Ezekiel Komia, Harry Vai, Angelo Yangen, Goada Raho, Philip Kenny and Wallen Tauloi.
“We believe in this team. They have the talent and experience to do well in Goroka. Most of them are well versed with the nines format having played in various tournaments especially over the last 12 months,” Solien said.
He said the only concern would be the weather in Goroka.
“We’re confident we can get the job done but the only issue might be the weather up there as many of our young guys haven’t played in a cooler, high altitude environment.
“Our side is dominated by Central and Motu Koita including few from NCD and one from Kerema.
“We are in pool C up against the Simbu Warriors, Madang and the Hela Wigmen.”
