KOMO Rugby League in Hela received a K100,000 boost from the Hides Gas Development Company (HGDC) to kick off its season earlier this month.
Komo, which has been marred by tribal fights in recent in years, was given a new lease of life through the theme “Lusim Gun na Play Rugby”, a community initiative fully supported by ExxonMobil PNG — operator of the PNGLNG project. Thousands flocked from the Komo area and other parts of the province to the Komo Rugby field to witness the event.
ExxonMobil and HGDC delegates were given a grand welcome with traditional dancing and singing.
“HGDC as a local landowner company, is pleased to support this kind of community initiative to bring peace and harmony in the community,” HGDC chairman Tuguyawini Libe Parindali said.
HGDC site operations manager Abel Voyorite said his company would always back ExxonMobil in any community initiatives in the Komo local level government.
“After losing many lives through tribal conflicts over the years we need to embrace peace and sport has always been a uniting force for the people,” Voyorite said.
“Peace is what we must all strive for and HGDC applauds EMPNG and local communities for taking this initiative.
“This league in Komo LLG must not stop as one day a talented Hunters or Kumul player will come out of this place.”
Voyorite said urged the Komo Rugby League to manage funds well for the benefit of the greatest number of people.
