THE opening of the K8 million Milfordhaven Road in Lae yesterday marked the end of the second last road to be completed by the Government in Lae.
The final section of the road is from the University of Technology to Bumayong.
Prime Minister Peter O’Neill said the road construction programme began in 2011.
“After the roads are fully completed, it will be handed over to the Lae City Authority who will manage and maintain those roads,” he said.
“The main aim of putting a cement surface is because Lae has high rainfall and that it can last longer.”
O’Neill said roads with bitumen surface did not last long.
“The whole programme was funded by the Government and we are happy with the contractor even though sometimes we pay them late but they have delivered exceptionally,” he said.
National Works Secretary David Wereh said the roads were of a high standard.
