Late Wilma Hahis. – Nationalpic by LORRAINE JIMAL

ALBERT Hahis from the Autonomous Region of Bougainville (AROB) was filled with mix feelings as he walked up the podium to receive his late daughter Wilma’s bachelor of arts degree.
The late Wilma Hahis, of Bougainville and Central parentage, passed away five months ago from asthma. She was 31.
She studied political science at the University of Papua New Guinea and was supposed to be among 207 students from the school of humanities and social sciences who graduated yesterday.
Wilma’s husband Stephen Pouru and children Benjamin, 8, and Zoey Jane, 4, were present to witness the event.
Her sister Monalisa Hahis said in the last two years of Wilma’s studies, she juggled being a mother and a student.
She would attend classes and then come home and attend to her family.
Sometimes she would stay up all night doing school work.
“Her dedication to both her families and studies never wavered one bit,” Monalisa said.
“I can truly say she is a superwoman.”
She said Wilma was a hardworking sister who was like a mother to her sisters and other family members and wanted the house to be in order all the time.
Monalisa said her sister entered university in 2010 but could not complete her course because she became pregnant and had to stay home to look after her baby.
In 2018, she returned to complete her studies and was supposed to graduate earlier this year but could not due to the Covid-19.
Monalisa said Wilma was waiting to receive her bachelor’s degree while working with Akzon Nobel and that she became ill until her sudden passing on June 23.
“We are proud of her achievements today and hope she’s also proud whenever she is looking down on us today.”
