Law drafted to help disabled

THE State has drafted a law to give more recognition to the plight of the 1.2 million people living with disability in the country.
Department of Community Development, Youth and Secretary Anna Solomon said people living with disabilities had equal rights and needed to be part of development.
“If we can help (them), then we are actually leaving no one behind,” she said.
“We need to make sure that in everything that we do, our people with disabilities are also moving with us.
“If we leave them behind, we are not achieving our sustainable development goals.”
Solomon said there were different forms of disabilities which had different needs.
Chairman of the National Board for Disabled Persons Ben Theodore said most of 1.2 million lived in poverty because of the absence of social and economic inclusion in education and infrastructure.
Theodore said the economic potential of the country would not be fully realised unless the 1.2 million people participated equally in development efforts.
