Lawyers, behaviour to be investigated

THE Government will conduct an investigation into the behaviour of lawyers, says Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Justice and Attorney General Davis Steven.
He told Parliament that department secretary Dr Eric Kwa will conduct it. Eastern Highlands Governor Peter Numu has queried what was being done on the behaviour of the lawyers in relation to the case regarding the provincial administrator’s position.
“One of the important challenges that we face today is to ensure our people have confidence in the justice system and that our courts will continue to do justice according to law,” Steven said.
He said Government agencies received legal services from the Solicitor-General’s office.
“I agree that one of the legacy issues is in terms of the capacity and the quality of legal service from the Solicitor-General’s office,” he said.
“The case about the provincial administrator’s position relates to a consent order. Consent orders are not easily entertained.”
Steven said the matter was currently being investigated by Kwa.
“Because the matter is in court, it is safe for us to conduct preliminary investigations and await the outcome of the arbitration now before the court. I’m looking forward to the court’s response in terms of the question of whether consent orders can be set aside.”
