WITH Michael Morgan announcing his retirement due to an ongoing shoulder injury and Jake Clifford seeking an early release to Newcastle, Papua New Guinea international Kyle Laybutt sees it as an opportunity for him to make an NRL comeback and help the struggling North Queensland Cowboys.
The Townsville Blackhawks playmaker told The National on Friday that Cowboys coach Todd Payten was impressed with his communication skills during the pre-season.
Laybutt unfortunately missed out on Cowboys’ 30-man squad for this year after he completed 12 weeks of a train-and-trial stint.
However, the 25-year-old said he could still get a call-up to the National Rugby League side if he put in good performances in the next couple of rounds of the Intrust Super Cup.
“Todd (Payten) was happy with my pre-season training that’s why he wanted me to complete the whole programme,” he said.
“Initially, my train-and-trial was six weeks.
“But Todd extended it to 12 weeks.
“Unfortunately I didn’t get the call-up and I am back playing fulltime with the Blackhawks.
“With what’s happening at the Cowboys, it is an opportunity and if I can be recalled, then I will be more than happy to step up.”
