LEADERS in the security sector should mentor their successors to raise the standard of their organisations in the country, an official says.
UK Army representative, Lt-Col Saskia Hart made the remark at the end of a weeklong strategic leadership programme that saw 23 officials from five organisations participate.
“This programme was a contributing factor towards empowering leaders and enabling their organisations to better look after the security sector of PNG and its people,” she said. “It also empowers the current crop of leaders in the security sector and with the insights acquired during training, it can be used to mentor upcoming leaders.”
Hart said participants who held various top and middle leadership positions were from the PNG defence force, Department of defence, foreign affairs, correctional services and the Department of Prime Minister and National Executive Council (DPMNEC).
“The course was targeted to enhance strategic leadership at the corporate and strategic level across Defence and the wider security sector hosting key discussions of self-awareness, leadership theory and practices, problems and challenges, strategy development, organisational culture, decision-making and communication,” he said.
DPMNEC participant Nellie Kati said the tools she had learnt would be used to analyse and strategise development in her line of work.
PNGDF, Major Ian Dademo said one of the important tools learnt from the leadership programme was on how to adapt and deal with changes in an organisation.
