Leaders warned not to harbour criminals

POLICE have warned leaders in Porgera, Enga not to help or harbour warlords, murderers or criminals in their communities or homes as it would lead to serious consequences.
This was the message brought across to the leaders on Wednesday during a meeting with peace representatives and police at Porgera by the contingent commander of Porgera police operation and deputy director of SSD, Chief Supt Luvi Florian, following the killing of Constable Timot Kavanamur at Suyan on Sunday.
He said the situation in Porgera was tense following the killing of Constable Kavanamur and leaders in each community should cooperate with police to hunt the suspects engaging in all sorts of killings and lawless activities.
Chief Supt Florian said community leaders had a big role to play at the moment to work with police and make sure culprits were arrested and faced the law.
He said police alone could not do all things at once, instead they needed a collective effort from the community at large and their leaders.
“If these warlords are from Hela and residing at Porgera, then community leaders should inform police instead of sitting quietly and pretending.
“Such people who have no respect for the law and lives, they have to be dealt with accordingly,” Chief Supt Florian said.
He said if leaders failed to cooperate then this would become a serious issue before or after the State of Emergency was launched.
Chief Supt Florian said the suspects involved in the killing of constable Kavanamur were known to police and the hunt was going on.
