PAPUA New Guinea Rugby Football League will now look at measures to make it possible for the rugby league-mad nation to watch English Super League matches.
PNGRFL chief executive officer Reatau Rau made mention of this while sending off PNG Kumuls brothers Wellington and Stanton Albert yesterday in Port Moresby.
“There is a chorus of voices coming through and PNGRFL is aware of the pressure that comes with a number of Kumuls now in England to play top level football,” Rau said.
“We will be coming out to work with the media, especially television companies here in Papua New Guinea and if they need help from us to connect them with Super League in England to see what the media department does out there, we now have an obligation with our current Kumuls in England now.
“PNGRFL will look at this as a responsibility to connect our television companies here in Papua New Guinea to showcase the Super League in England where majority of the Kumuls were playing.
“With the English Super League recruiting a total of six PNG Kumuls, we hope that Papua New Guinea will focus on the Super League in the years to come.
“Before the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, we had one PNG Kumuls player in veteran Paul Aiton.
“But after the World Cup we have six current PNG Kumuls players now to play in the Super League so that’s a big achievement for the game in the country.
“The investments that PNGRFL has made in the last four years were to make sure our players leave our shores, and that is our ultimate goal.”
