Learn from Sir Michael, change

Letters

THE father of the nation, Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare united people of almost a thousand languages and tribes and created Papua New Guinea.
He did not intend for PNG to be in debt.
Nor was it his intention for us to kill each other in the capital city, Port Moresby.
He did not anticipate our education system to produce a huge number of school leavers.
Sir Michael did not want university graduates looking for jobs.
He did not imagine there would be a small group of people who made up no more than a percentage of the country’s population to control and manipulate systems of government for their own benefit.
He did not think about foreigners doing businesses in our districts and villages.
The grand chief and the forefathers created the Constitution, created the system of government and brought Independence for a fair and just PNG for all.
He wanted men, women and children of PNG to have equal rights and freedom.
He wanted Papua New Guineans to enjoy life just as any other human being on this planet.
Sir Michael’s era has just ended and it is time for each one of us to reflect on the achievements and failures and make changes.
Living life is about finding solutions to problems and we have to seriously consider our journey from here onwards.
We cannot continue with the same mindset and techniques and expect different results.
For real change to happen, individuals should change.
This challenge goes to all those in authority who can change the course of this country to repent from your old ways and start a new course for yourself, your family, your clan, your LLG, your tribe, your district, your province and your country.
