CRICKET Papua New Guinea yesterday welcomed four former international cricketers, who will take part in the annual ‘Don’t Drink and Drive’ Legends Big Bash sponsored by Pacific MMI Insurance.
Former Australian test bowler Geoff Lawson and opening batsman Geoff Marsh, along with women’s representative Lisa Sthalekar and former New Zealand test paceman Chris Martin, arrived just after midday in Port Moresby and will help promote cricket, along with the themes of drink driving and gender-based violence, with visits to selected schools today before playing in the Twenty-20 competition tomorrow.
The insurance firm’s underwriting and claims manager Andrew Gogo welcomed the visiting cricket legends.
“We acknowledge the presence of the visiting cricket legends, in supporting our efforts to promote the development of grassroots cricket in PNG, and raising awareness on gender-based violence,” Gogo said.
International cricket veterans vising this year are Sthalekar, a former Australian captain and two-time ICC World Cup winner; Lawson, one of Australia’s leading bowlers of the early 1980s and former Pakistan coach; Marsh, a former top-order batsman and coach of two Aussie World Cup winning teams;  and Martin, one of New Zealand’s leading bowlers in the early 2000s.
