THE livestock industry needs legislative support to promote and regulate the sector in the country, says Livestock Development Corporation (LDC) managing director Terry Koim.
During the signing of two new policies in Port Moresby yesterday, Koim said LDC would use these policies to inform the country about the steps they were taking to advance the industry.
“Most livestock activities operate in a legislative space and this is the reason we are able to sign these policies,” Koim said.
“A lot of rehabilitation and restocking was done under the Medium-term Development Policy Three (MTDP3) and we are trying to put this into a policy context.”
He said the policies would be aligned with the recently launched MTDP4.
“We need this sort of legislative framework to protect the livestock industry,” he said.
“This promotes innovation, technological advancements and the adoption of best practices in the industry to help improve livestock productivity, efficiency and sustainability.”
Koim said consultations with their stakeholders on the policy draft would also be held.
“This step aims to gather input and feedback from relevant parties ensuring that the final policy aligns with the needs and interests of all stakeholders involved.
“We would like to give confidence to our stakeholders, farmers and the country that a draft would be done to undergo policy consultations before formulated,” he said.
