THE Papua New Guinea Lewas upset hosts Scotland in the opening fixture of their Women’s T20 World Cup qualifier on Sunday.
Led by an assured 30 from wicket-keeper Brenda Tau, PNG scored a six-wicket win over their highly favoured rivals in Arbroath, Scotland.
Batting first at Lochlands, the Scots made 101/5, with captain Kathryn Bryce hitting 45 from 50 balls while Lorna Jack and Rachel Scholes each added 14 runs.
PNG’s Sibona Jimmy picked up two wickets for 16 runs in her four overs while Ravini Oa (1-18), Konio Oala (1-13) and Naoani Vare (1-8) all contributed to restricting the Scots.
The Lewas reached the target (102 runs) with three balls to spare, finishing on 102/4, with Keeper Tau coming in at first drop, scoring 30 runs at a steady clip —off 31 balls — in an innings that saw her hit five boundaries; Tanya Ruma added 25 while captain Kaia Arua (10 not out) and Konio Oala (13 not out) saw the team to victory.
Scotland face the prospect of having to beat Bangladesh today to be in with a chance of the semifinals.
In Forfar, Bangladesh eased to an eight-wicket victory against the United States in less than nine overs and Group A’s top seeds faced PNG yesterday.
Group B features Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Namibia and the Netherlands.
The top-two sides will go through to the finals in Australia from Feb 21-March 8, joining the eight teams who qualify automatically.
Result: Scotland 101/5 (Kathryn Bryce 45; Sibona Jimmy 2-16) PNG 102/4 (Brenda Tau 30, Tanya Ruma 25; Kathryn Bryce 1-8). PNG won by six wickets. – BBC
