THE Kumul Petroleum Papua New Guinea Lewas are scheduled to leave the country for Zimbabwe next month with Cricket PNG (CPNG) finalising preparations for the Women’s World Cup qualifier.
CPNG general manager Tony Naidu, while announcing the appointment of Australian cricketer Kath Hempenstall as the new women’s head coach, told The National that the team would leave on Nov 6.
“Until then, they will be training and playing twice a week through to the end of this month,” he said.
“The last few days before they leave, they will be in quarantine.
“We are working on a schedule for warm-up matches in Zimbabwe to go along with the games they are playing at Amini Park before they leave.”
Naidu also confirmed Mahuru Dai as the women’s assistant coach to Hempenstall with the Lewas to be in camp after receiving approval from the National Control Centre.
“Hempenstall has just been named as head coach,” he said.
“Mahuru Dai will continue to be the assistant coach in PNG.
“We are working to finalise the coaching staff now and will announce as they get appointed.
“They will be training and playing at Amini Park, and that will be our main focus in the country right now.”
CPNG said last week that the Lewas would be unable to train under Hempenstall in the country due to Coronavirus restrictions, however, she would join them in Zimbabwe.
