A PUBLIC library in Port Moresby has been renamed in honour of a long-serving member of the National Library and Archives.
The Hohola Public Library will now be known as the Mary Kairu Warus Library.
The official launch was done on Friday at the end of National Book Week by senior management of the Office of Library and Archives along with local MPs and the family of Mary Kairu Warus.
Warus passed away in 2018 and one of the undertakings that the Office of Library and Archives made was to rename its public library in Hohola in her memory.
In 1983, Warus, of Gulf, served as provincial librarian at Vanimo Public Library.
From 1984 to 1985, she was the school librarian at Aitape High School and then became librarian at St Ignatius High School in Vanimo.
By 1988, Warus was cataloguing books and other library materials for 20 public libraries throughout the country.
She also catalogued films for film projects.
One of her major tasks was in 1996 which was the maintenance of the World Bank-funded project on the school library kina-for-kina subsidy to schools throughout the country.
From 2014 to 2018, she was the branch head who ensured that all libraries were maintained to provide services to support learning and teaching.
She was also the acting national librarian.
