SHOPS in Lae city which supply items to people to sell on the streets will have their licences revoked, according to Morobe Governor Kelly Naru.

Naru issued the warning yesterday while addressing hundreds of Lae residents at the St Martine’s Oval, Papua Compound, who came to hear his response to the petition submitted to him by protestors last week.

One of the demands in the petition was the ban on the supply of merchandise by shop owners to people to sell on the streets.

“The provincial government has banned street sales,” Naru said.

“There will be no more street sales in Lae city. We have instructed shops (owners) to stop what they are doing.

“If you know of any shops who are giving things to people to sell on the streets, you must report them to us. We will remove their licences.”

He said street vending had resulted in a lot of law and order problems such as pick-pocketing, harassing of women and girls and bag-snatching.

He however said disabled people who sold betel nuts and cigarettes in town would be given special consideration.

Naru said the provincial government and Lae city council would find space for them.
