A LIFE was lost and three people were injured near Dogura outside Port Moresby along the Magi Highway when two public motor vehicles (PMVs) collided early yesterday.
According to the St John Ambulance (SJA) head of clinical and operational support Jacquie Hennessy, the two PMVs, one closed and the other open-back, collided and rolled.
She said a 111 call was received at 6.30am and the SJA control centre dispatched four ambulances, a health extension officer (HEO) and the on-call specialist paramedic to the accident scene.
“One person was killed with three others injured,” Hennessy said.
“Two ambulances worked at the scene of the accident and transported one male patient with stable lower leg fractures.
“Two patients were transported via a private vehicle but were met enroute by the other St John teams.”
She said a female adult had head injuries and a male adult had leg and arm fractures with internal bleeding.
Hennessy said they were stablised by the HEO and paramedic prior to being transported to the Port Moresby General Hospital in a critical condition.
“This accident renews St John’s call to reconsider the speed limits along the highways,” she said.
“It serves as a reminder to drivers of open-back PMVs that have no seat belts to drive to the conditions and drive slower to keep their passengers safe.”
The Magi Highway incident closely followed a collision of a PMV and vehicle on Monday afternoon in the city at Murray Barracks where a man was trapped in a bus and was rescued by St John and the Fire Service. Last week, there was a motor vehicle accident that resulted in three deaths.
