Ling-Stuckey disappointed over Lelang’s comments

OPPOSITION Leader Joseph Lelang says Treasurer Ian Ling-Stuckey has “overreacted and is making a big fuss” over negative postings in the social media over the state of Papua New Guinea’s economy.
However, Ling-Stuckey dismissed claims on social media that PNG’s economy was in crisis due to hyperinflation and its foreign exchange reserves being at an all-time low.
Ling-Stuckey said the country needed public policy discussions based on facts.
“Our democracy is stronger when the Opposition puts alternative points of view,” he said.
“But these should be based on facts.
“This is the reason that I am disappointed by recent comments from Lelang.
“He has failed to condemn misinformation. He should have politely condemned the misinformation and lies that are out on social media, including from his own PNC party leader.
“I had hoped he would have taken his leadership role more seriously, even if it meant having to correct the misinformation from his party leader.
“This shows who really is in control of the Opposition and who is the puppet.” Ling-Stuckey said he agreed that a Government should listen to the views and concerns of its people.
“But it must also understand that much of the social media did not represent the country’s majority,” he said.
“And there are too many lies, conspiracy theories and scams on social media that must be verified as true.”
