A TOTAL of 47 Links of Hope participants completed the charity’s inaugural community rugby champions project on Friday in conjunction with Fisspots club and Papua New Guinea Rugby Union.
Union Get into Rugby coordinator and schools rugby development manager Sailosi Druma said the project was a success with participants and partners happy about week-long initiative.
“Since Fisspots approached us to run our Get into Rugby programme and that was the partnership that we had formed for this project,” he told The National.
“We came up with a concept of running a five-day clinic where we go through rugby union values and teach skills.
“Links of Hope was here to join in the delivery of messages around health and children.
“We had three of our coaches from Port Moresby also travel to Mt Hagen where 20 participants attended the project.
“It has been a really good week for us.
“When the children first came, they were very reserved and quiet.
“But at the end of the project, they’re all happy and excited about the new things they’ve learnt in rugby union.”
Links of Hope operates as a child sponsorship programme that provides monthly care packages and support to children with the charity now branching into sports initiatives.
The project is aimed at promoting health and fitness while helping address gender-based violence in PNG.
