LITTERING in public in Porgera, Enga, can land you in jail for a month if you aren’t able to pay a spot-fine.
Youths are taking the lead in cleaning and beautifying Porgera Valley under a town rangers’ initiative and the town will not tolerate litter bugs.
The Porgera urban local level government (LLG) town rangers’ initiative started in February with collaborative efforts of the members of the PNG Defence Force (PNGDF) who were on deployment there.
As part of community engagement, members of the East Sepik-based infantry battalion had led some members of the local community, including the local youths who are volunteers, conduct general clean-up of the Paiam township and Porgera Station.
Prior to this, the public areas were in a sorry state, with rubbish almost everywhere.
Today, it’s a different story as cleanliness is seen all around, even outside homes located along roads, thanks to the youths.
