Loan scheme to ease burden

Letters

I WOULD like to applaud the Marape-Steven Government for the tough stance taken to slash the Tuition Fee Free (TFF) policy funds by 50 per cent and allocating K200mil for the loan scheme for the tertiary students.
Let me clear the air for some of you who have been commenting blindly without analysing the underlying facts.
If you work out the figures, you will note the following:
lIf you calculate the 50 per cent slash in free tuition fee, the highest a parent would pay is K800-K850 (high-secondary school) and the lowest would be around K450-K500. For primary education you would be able to pay K50 (lowest) – K300 (highest); and,
lCompare that to universities; e.g Divine Word University, Madang. The lowest fee my parents paid was K4,700 per annum and the highest was K5,800 per annum. I was on HECAS (AES would be slightly lower than HECAS) for four consecutive years (2012-2015). For self-sponsor; the fees back than were K9,600-K9,800 per annum.
Now these fees have been increased drastically!
With the above facts provided, for those parents who have been complaining that they have been burdened; which one is cheaper?
If you have more than one child attending tertiary institutions, how much more/less would you pay? Is graduating more secondary school students every year more important than graduating more university graduates?
Let me be straight, stop lazing around and work hard to save up for your children’s school fee.
For the disabled, I withhold my comments. Image the sacrifice students and their parents go through for the child to reach university only to be sent home for school fee reason. It has been heart-aching seeing students in my cohort (in uni) being sent home because their parents could not afford the required fees.
I commend the government for the timely rescue!
Just imagine the whole fees stated above being covered for by the loan and parents taking care of the other associated costs?
From experience, I can say it is a major relief for the majority of the struggling parents. It’s awesome!
