THE founder of the Micro-Small-Medium Enterprise Council (MSMEC) James Gore is concerned about the challenges faced by producers in accessing the domestic market due to an influx of imported products.
“It is imperative for us to prioritise the development of our local industries and support increased production of goods that can be sourced locally,” he said.
“In light of this, the council calls on the Government to consider implementing import quotas on products that can be supplied by local producers.
“These import quotas should be based on credible and objective industry studies that identify areas where local production can meet domestic demand effectively.
“One key area that requires immediate attention is the agriculture sector, particularly the production of crops.
“By setting import quotas and supporting import substitutes, the Government can foster a conducive environment for local producers to thrive, create jobs, and contribute to the growth of our economy.”
He said it was crucial for policymakers to recognise the importance of supporting local industries and ensuring a level playing field for our producers.
“By implementing measures to enhance domestic market access for locally produced food, we can build a more sustainable and resilient national economy for the benefit of all stakeholders.
“The MSME Council stands ready to collaborate with Government and industry stakeholders to drive forward these initiatives and create a more vibrant ecosystem for local producers.
“Together, we can work towards building a stronger and more self-reliant economy that truly supports the growth and development of our nation.”
