A SOCCER tournament in Gabensis, Huon Gulf district, held over the New Year at a cleared area used as a battle ground by drunken youths, has been hailed by community leaders.
The Kolfil mini-tournament held at Pupiraron village ended its finals last week.
However, there is support from the community to make it an annual event, with organisers announcing Morobe Mining Joint Venture as one of the first business houses to commit their assistance this year.
The event was organised by Philip Wago who encouraged the youths to unite in sports and refrain from social ills like drugs and alcohol abuse.
Wards 3 and 4 councillors Antipas Morris and Francis Paul, former senior public servant Senga Siserta and land mediators Awa Neiman and Wago Umpuano said it was an achievement because it was contributing positively to social developments in the community.
The leaders committed the land to be converted into a playing field to unite the neighbouring communities.
He challenged the youths to respect the people and commit themselves to holding peaceful sports gatherings.
Foul Cruz beat Farm 2 to claim the first place trophy in the men’s division while NGI beat Kolfil to be named the women’s champions.
