THE Yekora people have embraced a fishery and jetty project funded by the National Fisheries Authority (NFA) in partnership with Huon Gulf, Morobe, a councillor says.
Yekora ward councillor Peter Yasaro told Huon Gulf MP Ross Seymour at Ogoma village that people in seven Yekora villages appreciated the fish market at Sapa and jetty at Morobe station.
Yekora said it would benefit people in 20 wards in the Morobe local level government (LLG).
He said the projects were welcomed by the Yekora people whose land had hosted various social services in health and education provided by the Government as well as churches.
Yekora said people in the district were still walking long distances and paddling in canoes to access health and education at Morobe station, Zaka and Parogira.
“With the establishment of a fish market, we are privileged as it is a bonus to our people that will enable them participate meaningfully to make a living,” he said.
“The facilities will also complement boat building, fishery and net mending certificate courses proposed to be taught at Morobe Technical High School.”
Yasaro highlighted the lack of aid posts, communication, road and transport services.
