MANY punters are expected to pack bookmakers around Papua New Guinea to place their bets for this afternoon’s A$7.3 million (K17.17 million) Melbourne Cup.
Punters have always earmarked the 3200m race as one of the best in their sporting calendars.
Pacific Racing and Sports Betting said favourite Yucatan, Best Solution, Magic Circle and The Cliffsofmoher were being backed to win the 3200m race.
Pacific Racing and Sports Betting manager Peter McCoy said Runaway, trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, was one of Australia’s best chances to win the cup.
“This is going to be big as no one knows who will be the winner, but the turn around the bend will decide which horses finish strongly,” he said.
“Whether it is the runner, weight or barrier, it all depends on how the jockeys approach the race.”
Several punters interviewed by The National said they were looking forward to the race.
McCoy said punters had started placing their bets since Saturday.
The race at the Flemington Racecourse starts at 2pm.
